What does the first repo rate rise in nearly four years mean for your money

The Reserve Bank has raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent, its first increase since February 2023. The decision was unanimous, and the stance shifted to calibrated tightening. Growth for FY27 is projected at 7.1 per cent, so this is about prices rather than any weakness in the economy.

The reasons are familiar. Crude above 100 dollars, a softer rupee, and retail inflation climbing steadily through the year have squeezed the comfort the central bank enjoyed in 2025. Rising American rates added pressure too. SBI Research expects another 25 basis point increase in December, so the cycle may continue.

Borrowers feel this first. Home loan rates linked to the repo will reset at the next review, and your EMI or tenure will rise. Savers gain, because deposit rates follow upward. So consider locking longer fixed deposits now, prepay costly loans if you can, and keep equity SIPs steady.
