Could a bill in Washington really put a hundred per cent tariff on Indian goods

A Russia sanctions bill has moved closer to a final vote in the US House. The Senate already passed it 86 to 11 last month. It would let the American President impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries that keep buying Russian oil and gas, and one amendment names India directly.

Understand why India is in the frame. We import over 88 per cent of our crude, and Russia now supplies more than half of that after years of discounts. Arrivals touched about 2.7 million barrels a day in mid year. Washington sees this as funding the war, while Delhi calls it plain energy security.

Nothing is settled yet. The bill still allows a presidential waiver, tariffs would raise costs for American buyers too, and trade talks between the two countries continue. So watch export heavy sectors like textiles, gems and auto parts, stay diversified, and avoid rebuilding your portfolio around one headline.
