What does America raising rates after three years mean for your investments

The US Federal Reserve has raised its policy rate by 25 basis points to 3.75 to 4 per cent. This is its first increase since July 2023, driven by inflation staying above target and strong producer price pressure. Markets had priced in a 93 per cent chance of the move beforehand.

Higher American rates matter to us because money travels. Safer dollar deposits and treasury bonds start paying more, so global investors reconsider how much they keep in emerging markets. That can slow foreign inflows, weaken the rupee and push Indian bond yields up, especially when crude is already costly.

Keep the reaction measured. Markets are pricing 75 basis points of further tightening by March 2027, which several brokerages think is too aggressive. India also grows faster than most peers and domestic SIP money now anchors our market. So continue your monthly investing, favour shorter duration debt, and ignore single day swings.
