Can new labour laws reshape work in India

India’s new labour laws merge 29 old laws into four codes so rules become simpler and more consistent for wages, safety, social security and industrial relations. These codes aim to support both growth and worker welfare because they bring clarity in areas that were earlier scattered and confusing.

The Code on Wages and the Code on Social Security focus on fair pay, timely payment and wider coverage of benefits like PF, ESI and maternity support. They also bring gig, platform and unorganised workers into the formal safety net so more Indians can access basic protection during illness, old age or job loss.

The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code and the Industrial Relations Code target safer workplaces and smoother handling of disputes. They define working hours, overtime and welfare facilities more clearly and they promote faster resolution of conflicts so both employers and workers can plan with more confidence.
