From today, 99% of Indian goods enter the UK at zero duty. That covers garments (previously 12% duty), engineering goods and auto components (18%), leather and footwear (16%), pharmaceuticals and chemicals (8%), and marine products (21.5%). Bilateral trade stood at roughly $58 billion in FY2026, and the two governments have set a target to double that to $120 billion by 2030. In exchange, India opens 89.5% of its tariff lines covering 91% of British exports. India’s trade secretary called it the country’s most aspirational trade pact, and based on the scope of concessions, that assessment is fair.

The sector-level picture is concrete. NSE-listed textile exporters, specialty chemical manufacturers, pharma API companies, and leather goods makers become more price-competitive in the UK market from today. Beyond goods, the deal unlocks 20,000 annual service-supplier visas for Indian IT, engineering, and design professionals, and a Double Contribution Convention saves Indian workers in the UK over Rs 4,000 crore a year in social security costs. On the import side, Scotch whisky, luxury UK cars, cheese, chocolates, and cosmetics get cheaper in India over time. India retained protection for sensitive categories including fresh apples, walnuts, smartphones, and gold bars. Non-tariff barriers remain in place, including UK product certification standards and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), so the export opportunity for smaller companies will take time to realise in full.

For an investor, this is a multi-year structural tailwind, not a reason to trade tomorrow. Markets have partly priced in the ratification over the past few weeks, so the first-day pop, if any, may be modest. The real opportunity shows up in order books two to four quarters from now, when exporters in textiles, specialty chemicals, and pharma begin reporting UK revenue growth in their earnings calls. The honest answer is: do not reshuffle your portfolio based on today’s announcement. That said, if you already hold quality exporters in these sectors, this agreement strengthens their long-term earnings outlook in a meaningful way. Watch for management commentary on UK order pipelines when Q1 FY27 results arrive in July and August.

Try our free Gold Investment Calculator →

The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) entered into force today, July 15, 2026 – and it is the most significant bilateral trade pact India has signed.
