This upgrade builds on a sharply higher estimate of 7.6 per cent growth for 2025, driven by better than expected performance in the second and third quarters and sustained strength into the last quarter. The IMF expects India to keep its place as the fastest growing major economy over the next two years, even as global growth is projected to slow to about 3.1 per cent in 2026 because of rising geopolitical risks and higher commodity prices.

At the core of this optimism is a combination of domestic resilience and a favourable external shift. The IMF notes that the carryover from a strong 2025, with robust domestic demand and steady activity, is helping lift the outlook for 2026 and beyond. A key external factor is the steep reduction in additional US tariffs on Indian goods, from 50 per cent to 10 per cent, which eases pressure on exporters and offsets some of the drag from higher energy and fertiliser prices linked to tensions in West Asia and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. So, even as the global trade environment looks weaker and global inflation is now expected to edge up to 4.4 per cent in the near term, India’s growth path still looks relatively stable.

At the same time, the IMF is quite clear that risks remain tilted to the downside for the world economy and that a prolonged Middle East conflict or deeper supply disruptions could change the picture. Emerging markets and developing economies, especially those closer to the conflict zone or with weaker buffers, are expected to feel almost twice the impact compared to advanced economies, and this could spill over through trade, capital flows and commodity prices. For India, the message is that a 6.5 per cent growth path is achievable, but policymakers need to stay alert on inflation, energy security and fiscal prudence so that the current momentum is protected even if external shocks persist.

The IMF has raised India’s GDP growth forecast to 6.5 per cent for FY27 and FY28, signalling strong confidence in the country’s economic momentum despite a more fragile global backdrop and the ongoing Middle East conflict.
